Q&A with the Krankbrothers

Do you prefer DJing or promoting your own parties?

I think a lot of promoters see themselves as being DJs above promoters - most of them probably started putting on parties in the first place just to give themselves a slot! But actually we probably derive more pleasure from curating an entire event - from the venue, to the sound, lighting, set design, even the people! Although sometimes when you just turn up with your DJ bag to play a party and it happens to be a really good promoter, then that's great too - zero hassle.

Q&A with the Krankbrothers

Who does what in the booth – you have separate jobs or?

We play straight up back to back, one tune each. We never know what each other are going to play. So it's one and the same job really - it's a team effort basically.

Think you'll ever produce together?

Possibly down the line. But it's something that requires a huge amount of time, and we're very busy on other projects right now. Most people produce music to get more gigs, but we're pretty happy with the level of DJ bookings and amount that we are getting right now, and don't want to increase really!

How long you spend looking for new music each week?

Hours and hours! Because of running the booking agency and also the events, we're always on the look out for new producers and sounds, so that's part of why we listen to so much music. There's so much to discover. Especially when you delve into the past couple of decades rather than the Beatport Top 100 like a lot of guys do. But actually one of my favourite parts of the day is when I'm finished working and can just put on a nice old funk or soul record - give my ears a rest from house music.

How does a track have to make you feel before you play it out?

Like I want to dance maybe? Or just be interested by it - think it will have an interesting effect on the floor.

How's your year been so far?

Really good. We've done some amazing parties - particularly the Bpitch party with Ellen Allien & Kiki. We've also played some really good gigs outside our own parties too. But starting to look forward to the summer now - a few Ibiza shows, a series of roof parties, a street party, some festivals, Groove Fest in Dominican Republic and much more!

What's got you most excited?

Probably bringing krankbrother to Ibiza for 3 parties across the summer - it's a big step but we're up for the challenge.

What else you looking forward to?

A week on the beach in the Caribbean and a party on a helipad maybe…?

What do you like to do outside music?

A lot of normal things: eat, drink, read, party, stay in, have sex, look at art, sleep, eat, cycle, see friends, jog, ….nothing that unusual!

What should people expect from you at Groove Fest?

Some sunshine music...
